A Connection Journey: Rediscovering Mind, Body, Spirit and the World Around

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? A reflection of your body, your health—but what lies beneath the surface? In the Western world, we often find ourselves consumed by our minds—our thoughts, achievements, and ambitions. We pride ourselves on being part of the "developed world," yet our focus often remains fixated on monetary gain, material possessions, and consumption. If we revisit Maslow’s Pyramid of Needs, these pursuits represent only the most basic levels. How, then, can we call ourselves a "developed society"?

Many of us are disconnected from our own bodies and emotions. We overlook sensations and feelings, ignoring the signals our physical selves send us. This disconnect not only affects our personal lives but also influences how we engage with the world.

The Importance of Connection

A harmonious relationship between mind and body fosters synergy. By paying attention to physical sensations and analyzing them, we unlock insights that empower and protect us. However, neglecting this connection leads to a lack of awareness—not only of ourselves but of the environment and the impact we leave behind.

Pause and take a moment to look around. Whether you’re in an apartment or surrounded by nature, what do you notice? Beauty may capture your attention—or you may feel a sense of disconnection. But what about the things we often avoid—the truth about our influence on the planet? Our actions—or inactions—create ripples that aren't always immediately visible. Yet the consequences are real, regardless of where we are.

Personal Discovery and the Path to Wholeness

In my former profession, spanning almost 15 years, I found intellectual fulfillment working with global trade flows. It was interesting, challenging, and exciting. But something was missing—a void I knew I would fill over time. Self-connection is not a momentary event; it is a gradual journey. We are born whole, but many of us lose that wholeness as we become trapped in the mind. Reconnecting mind and body is one way to rediscover that sense of completeness.

This reconnection might begin with yoga, though yoga extends far beyond its physical practice. I’ve met numerous people who transitioned from “successful” careers in finance, law, and sales to becoming yoga teachers. By “successful,” I mean in the conventional sense: financially stable, profitable and well-organized. But evolution plays a role here, too. After the Second World War, survival was the priority for many. In recent decades, the Western world has been fortunate to experience peace and stability, allowing us to think beyond immediate material needs and explore higher aspirations. Recent events thought undermining this platform of stability, keeping bigger picture may become more challenging.

Techniques to Reconnect with Yourself

Depending on where you are in your journey, consider these techniques to deepen your self-connection. They foster authenticity and help move beyond superficial blame toward meaningful action:

  • Pause throughout the day and ask yourself: What do I feel at this moment? Recognize your body sensations.

  • Practice breathing exercises, often referred to as pranayamas.

  • Spend time in nature, even for just 10–15 minutes, and observe your surroundings as well as your feelings.

  • Explore meditation and visualisation techniques.

  • Engage in yoga or other practices that connect mind and body. As my yoga teacher once shared, we approach asanas (yoga postures) much like we approach life. Are we calm and grounded, or do we struggle to stay in the posture and simply breathe?

  • Stay curious about other practices and techniques. Regularity is key—the more consistent you are, the stronger your neuronal connections become, and over time, the benefits will manifest.

We are inherently social beings, often surrounded by people living similar lives. Implementing positive changes in your own life can set an inspiring example for others, creating a ripple effect that encourages self-connection and growth in those around you. In doing so, you embody leadership and influence.

In my personal journey, I’ve embraced all these practices and transformed my career from commodity trading to becoming a Life and Leadership Coach, as well as a yoga teacher. I truly love what I do—it is intellectually challenging while allowing me to stay connected with my body and spirit. I help my clients rediscover their path and reconnect with their authentic selves.

Letting Go to Create Space

Before embarking on something new, we may need to let go of the old. This process can take time and effort. Consider: What is hidden behind the constant busyness you surround yourself with? When you sense something missing in your life, don’t ignore it—that feeling is your truth speaking. Explore, connect with others, and try new experiences. Over time, hints and insights will emerge, gradually revealing a more complete picture.

Shaping the Future

Every choice shapes the future. The way we live today directly impacts the world of tomorrow—for ourselves and future generations. The air they breathe, the temperature they feel on their skin and the comfort of life on Earth depend on the actions we take now.

So pause. Connect with your emotions, sensations, and truth. Regular self-connection fosters presence and awareness, leading to a deeper sense of purpose. In my coaching approach, I create a safe space for individuals to simply be and discover what truly matters.

Presence is powerful, but embracing the bigger picture is transformative. Together, as individuals and as a collective, we shape the future—for ourselves and those who come after us. A deeper connection to oneself naturally enhances our perception of the broader world and its challenges.

Every contribution matters. Stay grounded in the moment, but keep the greater vision alive.

How close are you to be truly connected with oneself and the world around you?
